HS Curriculum: Grading, Info
High School Curriculum, Credit, and Grading
The school provides an American,
standards-based curriculum and the language of instruction is
English. With approval from the counselor and principal, seniors
and juniors have the opportunity to take Virtual High School classes
under the supervision of the VHS coordinator. Japanese
course offerings are extensive (7 levels); level 4 is equivalent to an
Advanced Placement class.
Credit is given by semesters. One full credit
is awarded for the successful completion of two semesters of a
course. Classes are taught on a block schedule with six 90-minute
periods meeting over two days and two 45-minute periods meeting every
day for a total of eight classes.
Letter grades are given for all courses.
Cumulative grade point averages (GPAs) are calculated by semester on a
4.0 weighted scale. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are weighted
for grades C and higher. Only classes taken while at NIS are
included in cumulative GPAs. Transfer grades are not used in this
calculation. Letter grades are assigned based on the percentage
scores shown below along with grade points (GP) for both regular and AP
classes.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate, a student must earn a minimum of 24
credits over eight semesters (four full years) of study in grades 9,
10, 11, and 12. New students to NIS are allowed to transfer a
maximum of 7 credits per year from their previous high
school. The minimum number of credits required for
graduation, by subject area, is:
English Language & Literature (4.0),
Mathematics (3.0), Social Studies (3.0), Science (3.0), Fine Arts
(2.0), Japanese (1.0), Physical Education (2.0), Computer (0.5),
Electives (5.5)
