High School Admissions
Applications are accepted year-round for high school students, with
the exception of applicants for 12th grade, who must complete one full
year at NIS prior to graduation*. Admission is based primarily on
English language proficiency, past academic history, space availability
and suitability of program. Admission to the NIS high school is
recommended only for students with sufficient academic ability,
interest, and motivation to benefit from the program. NIS expects the
applicant to be sufficiently mature for his/her age and for continued
enrollment at NIS, and satisfactory progress needs to be
demonstrated.
NIS follows a school-calendar year starting at the end of August and
finishing in mid-June, thus maintaining an age cut-off date of Sept. 1
for grade placement. While recognizing that school systems have
different cut-off dates, NIS must consider a number of factors for
grade placement within our program. Each student’s case must be
considered on an individual basis. All students are urged to start the
admissions process as early as possible, but this is particularly true
with high school students.
For high school students whose native language is different than
English, NIS does NOT offer ESOL service for high school students whose
English language proficiency requires support. If deemed necessary, the
applicant may be asked to take a test to assess English language
proficiency prior to an interview. In other cases, some students may be
assessed upon admission and soon after enrollment commences. Students
who do not have sufficient English language proficiency may be denied
admissions.
Tours of the school can be arranged through the Development office.
NIS does not however, allow one-day “trial” enrollment or extended
lengths of time spent visiting the classroom. For more information
about admissions, please learn more here (NIS Admissions)
* The IB Diploma requires two complete years of study;
students entering NIS after the beginning of grade 11 will not be
eligible for the IB Diploma unless the student is coming from a similar
IBDP program.
