Students in the NIS ELC are busy right from the start of their day! After getting dropped off at the front stops of the ELC building, students rush to their cubbies to change into their “room shoes”. After putting their bags and any jackets or art smocks in their cubby alongside their shoes, there is excitement in the air as the students gather and get comfy around the big carpet for the first of three “Circle Times”. After sharing thoughts about the day ahead or talking about what day of the week it is and perhaps a special theme or event for the day, the students get to work for "Work Time!"

Soon “Work Time” ends and the students know what comes next – “Learning Center Time”.   Whether the students spend all of their time alone at one “center” or make it a point to visit every center with a group of friends, the teachers work with the students as the children choose how to spend their time at various “Centers”.  After a short period where everyone helps to clean up, the students gather back around the big carpet for another “Circle Time" to talk about the day so far.  Soon, however, comes two of the students’ favorite times of the day – outside play-time and lunch time!

The ELC students have a safe and sunny environment with many age appropriate toys that they are free to choose from their storage area.  Often times the teachers help bring out lots of fun things to balance on and play with.  While the play area for the big kids are close-by and tempting, all of the students know that they are not allowed to use that equipment.  Sometimes the field is a great place to play on as well!  After lunch in the classroom, some children are exhausted after all of this work and play.  Some read quietly while others fall asleep on mattresses. The quiet time offers a break from all of the learning that is going on!

Afterwards, the students return to work time before spending more time outside (sometimes after spending some time in the gym), depending on the weather and the projects that they are working on.  Finally, one last “Circle Time” comes after playing outside in order to talk about the day and reflect on some of the things learned.

It has been a busy day. Students put their shoes back on at their cubbies, gather up any thing that they need to take hope with their home notebook, and head out.  Some students are picked up by their parents, others go home on the bus, guided by their teacher to the bus.  Either way, students soon look forward to another busy day in the ELC.
