ELC Curriculum
How We Learn in the ELC
The ECP curriculum focuses on the social, physical, cognitive, and
emotional development of the child. Through a wide array of structured
and unstructured experiences, the teachers strive to promote
independent learning, critical and creative thinking, effective
communicating, and collaborative and quality work.
Circle
Time: Students gather three times a day as a group to
promote a nurturing and collaborative environment as part of their
daily routine. Each day begins with circle time for morning greetings
and introduction to the day's routines. Midday circle time serves to
reinforce learning from learning centers and often incorporates singing
and movement activities. Circle time also serves to bring the class
together at the end of each school day for closure.
Work Time: Teachers use
“Work Time” to introduce projects or activities for students to “work”
on, often as a group.
Learning
Centers: Independent learning
and collaborative work are enhanced through "Learning Centers" that
foster development in the areas of language, math, art, science, music,
and technology. Besides learning how to work independently, students
also learn how to work cooperatively by sharing and taking turns. Below
are descriptions of the centers that typically available for the
students to use:
Art Center: Here students learn
to express feelings and thoughts through artwork, to express
individuality and to recognize colors, shapes, and textures.
Science
Center:
At the Science Center, students learn to observe, compare and contrast
materials, to understand cause and effect and to develop
problem-solving skills.
Language
Area:
The
Language Area nurtures a love for books, creativity and imagination,
increases vocabulary, and develops storytelling
abilities.
Music and Mat
Area:
The Music and Mat area provides a place
for students to improve balance, rhythm, and coordination, as well as
to refine listening skills.
Math
Center: At
the Math Center, students learn concepts of color, size, and shape, how
to classify and sequence objects in logical ways, begin to learn more
about number concepts and to develop matching and pairing
skills.
Block
Center: The Block Center provides a fun area for
students to develop an understanding of concepts of length, height and
weight, to classify and sort objects, to predict cause and effect
relationships, develop eye-hand coordination and to control the
placement of
objects.
Dress-up
Center:
Here students not only learn to use
symbols to represent objects and situations, they also begin to
demonstrate an understanding of social expectations and attitudes of
others.
Computer
Center:
The Computer Center encourages
students to develop early reading skills, to understand cause and
effect and to eye and hand
coordination.
Guided
Learning:
At
Certain times of the day the teachers may provide structured student
learning time that involves teacher-directed activities as
well.
