Elementary Admissions

Like most international schools, students of varying ages enter NIS at a variety of times during the academic school year. Applications are accepted year-round for elementary students, and admission is based primarily on English language proficiency, space availability, suitability of program, and a demonstrated need for an education in English. Admission to NIS is recommended only for students with sufficient academic ability, interest, and motivation to benefit from the program. NIS expects the applicant to be sufficiently mature for his/her age and for continued enrollment at NIS, and satisfactory progress needs to be demonstrated.

NIS follows a school-calendar year starting at the end of August and finishing in mid-June, thus maintaining an age cut-off date of Sept. 1 for grade placement. While recognizing that school systems have different cut-off dates, NIS must consider a number of factors for grade placement within our program. Each student’s case must be considered on an individual basis.

For students whose native language is different than English, NIS does offer ESOL support. However, offers an ESOL support program for certain students whose English language proficiency requires support. Ultimately, admission to NIS for non-native English speakers is based on class availability, program, and a demonstrated need for an education in English. If deemed necessary, the applicant may be asked to take a test to assess English language proficiency prior to an interview. In other cases, some students may be assessed upon admission and soon after enrollment commences.

Tours of the school can be arranged through the Development office. NIS does not however, allow one-day “trial” enrollment or extended lengths of time spent visiting the classroom.
