Planning Ahead

Strategic Planning: Guiding NIS to the Future

In 2005, NIS came to the end of a 10-year “Strategic Plan” initiated in the 1994-95 school year that had a significant impact on the entire school community. Encouraged by the affect that plan had on both facilities and program, the school was determined to build on those achievements and asked the community to help revise a new plan for the future of NIS.

Nearly 80 people from the NIS community formed 18 focus groups for four straight days of meetings with a facilitator. From those meetings many strengths of NIS were recognized: the close relationships among students, teachers, and parents; our dedicated team of staff; our supportive community; and our safe, secure, and enjoyable learning environment.

Areas of concern and ways to strengthen NIS also emerged: enhancing academic and extra-curricular offerings for the high school program; adding more after-school elementary activities; lowering teacher turnover rate; developing a more dynamic website; better accommodating changing student demographics; maintaining admissions standards.

Most participants agreed on one key issue: that the number of families needing an international education in Nagoya will grow and strategies to accommodate that growth must be developed. Thus, the school now is focusing on five critical areas to adequately plan for the future:

  • Continuing to improve the quality of education
  • Addressing educational needs of changing student population
  • Developing a plan for funding future needs
  • Developing a strategy for increased enrollment
  • Ensuring strong, committed leadership of the school

Board committees, representing a cross section of the school community, have developed “strategic priorities” and action plans for the preferred future of NIS. Both the process and discipline of strategic planning continue to foster within the community a common vision, purpose and direction for the school. The school will continue to involve all stakeholders in the improvement process, knowing that a collaborative, consultative approach to planning and implementation is the most effective means to bring about positive, long-lasting change.
