Introduction to NIS

Creating life-long learners

From the very first squeak of their gym shoes at the entrance of Nagoya International School (NIS), students can feel there’s a different passion here. Yes, our focus is to pass knowledge forward. But we are also readying students for an increasingly complex world. We want our students to take their final steps from our campus prepared for the adventures ahead — whether they leave after 2nd grade or as graduating seniors.

This is why one of our critical roles is also to foster lifelong curiosity. We want every student to be well equipped to follow their dreams, whether it’s a thirst for more knowledge, a passion for art or music, or discovering ways to be better global citizens.
At NIS, children have experiences that build critical thinking skills, opportunities to tackle new challenges, and forums to seek answers to hard questions. They find a solid foundation of learning and values from which to grow and mature.

Potential-centered curriculum

Structured along a North American model of education and guided by the philosophies of the IBO, our standards-based, English-language, college-preparatory curriculum is the backbone of the NIS program. This integrated, comprehensive plan starts with how we teach our youngest children and continues through how we guide those ready to step out into the world. The curriculum provides well-defined benchmarks that prepare our students for future education. At the same time, it’s a curriculum that encourages all of us to “celebrate uniqueness” as we encourage achievements of each individual.

We fulfill the challenging curriculum with smaller classes and ongoing communication, and, most importantly, with a highly-qualified, caring faculty, hired from around the world. These professional, certified instructors are central to our goals of excellence:

  • Developing critical thinkers who seek better solutions.
  • Fostering a joy of learning.
  • Creating the habits of contributing to the community around us.
  • Nurturing independent learning, creativity and collaboration.

Facilities that take students further

Over the past decade, we have worked to create a forward-built campus, a facility that best meets our needs today and creates the infrastructure for the next generation of students. Technologies will no doubt change, but our commitment is to have a campus that makes the best use of space, whether for chemistry lab or drama productions, writing seminars or musicals, varsity basketball or sculpture class.

And we are continually working to provide a space that enhances the environment for learning and allows our children to develop to their full potential. In 2004 we completed a critical first phase of a long-term facilities plan with the complete renovation of the Early Childhood and Raymond buildings, and in 2006 completed the renovation of the athletic field and elementary playground. In 2008 the middle school was expanded to increase classroom space and allow for barrier-free access, and a neighboring home was turned into our new "Cultural Center" in 2009. The phases that follow will help us to use our land most effectively for parking, larger-scale performances and classroom space as needed.

The source of success

We know why we are successful; our goals as a world-class educational institution are achieved when we are in partnership with our wider community. What we share with our parents is a commitment to provide the very best international educational experience possible. We will remain close to the community of students and families we serve and close to the broader community in Nagoya where we are located.

Our community is also what sets NIS apart — a solid core of educators, families, friends and businesses continually working together toward a common goal. As a result, NIS has become a model for other growing international communities.
What began on these hills of Nagoya 46-years ago to meet a pressing local need has become a school that students aspire to, one that will challenge and prepare them for life beyond our walls. It is a school that keeps kids curious, for life.
