Stepping Out Into the World After NIS
Like all international schools, NIS students enter and leave at a
variety of times during the academic school year, at a variety of ages
and after varying lengths of stay. Whether the student is a child of an
expatriate employee, a local foreign resident or a Japanese “returnee,”
the goal of the college-preparatory curriculum is the same: a smooth
transition to another international school, a school back home or
entrance to a college or university in an English language environment.
Graduates of our program earn a U.S. recognized diploma, and a majority
of graduates continue their education in Colleges or Universities in
the U.S. or Canada. Graduates of the Class of 2010 will be the first
class eligible to obtain the IB Diploma.
Recently many expatriate students have been increasingly
non-American, and the school is striving to meet the demands of these
international students as they return to their non-English based school
systems. Parents are encouraged to work closely with both their school
systems and/or governments in their home country as well as the NIS
guidance counselor to determine an appropriate course of study for
their unique situations.
All courses are taught in English within an accredited curriculum,
with the exception of Japanese and Spanish language courses. The
university system in Japan requires a different course of study to
master the skills needed to sit the national Japanese University
Entrance Examination. While there are a growing number of Japanese
universities that offer a limited English-language based program within
a liberal arts curriculum, for those students hoping to continue in
their studies in Japanese within more conventional majors in
universities in Japan, NIS recommends different schooling options in
Nagoya within the Japanese school system.
