Visual & Performing Arts
Visual and Performing Arts classes are an essential component of a
well-balanced education. The NIS curriculum celebrates the unique and
shared values of art, music and drama. Our goal is for students to gain
an appreciation for a variety of art forms and to instill a sense of
confidence and self-respect within our students. Our facilities reflect
this philosophy.
The art facility is a large and spacious room with an adjacent
work-room dedicated to clay work and includes a kiln and one wheel for
extensions of hand-built work. A digital photostudio with three large
iMacs is used in photography studies. The addition of the Cultural
Center to our facilities in 2009 provides space for a second art room
used mainly for younger students.
The music program encompasses preschool to grade twelve, and a large,
music room with two soundproof practice rooms provide ample space for a
wide range of age groups. The preschool-middle school content areas
include instrumental and vocal performance, listening, movement,
composition, and improvisation. A combination of Orff and Kodaly
methodologies drive the music curriculum. Music technology is used to
enhance and extend basic music skills. The high school program focuses
on vocal techniques as they are applied to major choral works. There
are after school instrumental opportunities for elementary-high school
students wanting to perform in small ensembles and discover new genres
of music.
In drama and theater courses at NIS, we use a variety of instructional
techniques to enhance students learning. Students participate in
events, and become familiar with multimedia learning tools.
Middle school courses aim to to build confidence and
self-awareness. High school drama concentrates on the entire
production of a play - not only performance, but also set design and
construction, and sound and lighting. The main stage in the
commons performing space has been redesigned with a new lighting system
and additional sound equipment. Classes are held regularly in the Wing
Building stage area which has been turned into a "Black Box" theater
space.
