Attributes & Indicators

Attributes of Staff & Indicators of Success

The quality of our professional staff is the most important resource at NIS. The following characteristics were developed as part of our strategic action plan for recruiting and retaining exemplary staff. They are considered essential for success at NIS.

Professionalism
Faculty and staff actively support the school's philosophy and goals and contribute to a positive school morale. Concerns are voiced in a professional manner and members willingly share ideas with colleagues and participate in school activities outside normal school hours.

Dedication

All faculty demonstrate a commitment to excellence in education and the ability to motivate students to excel in all aspects of school life, volunteer for and become actively involved in committee work, demonstrate an enthusiasm for participating in organized activities, and become actively involved in integrating into experiences outside of school.

International Perspective
Faculty view the total school environment and experience from an international perspective. This includes the ability to: successfully interact with colleagues, students and parents from multi-ethnic backgrounds; exhibit an interest in and sensitivity for cultural diversity; adjust to new surroundings; and become a positive contributing member of the school community.

Competence

Faculty must possess and demonstrate subject knowledge and mastery of a variety of effective teaching skills and strategies. Teachers should create excitement and manifest enthusiasm for their subject area that inspires and motivates students. The school's continuing education allowance should be used for professional development in the teacher's area of expertise.

Child-Centered
Educators tend to be in this field because of their interest in and love for children. It is important for us to remember that decisions should be made according to the following criteria in the order listed:

• What is in the best interests of our students?
• What is in the best interests of our school?
• What is in the best interests of our personnel?

Positive Attitude
The ability to be positive about a variety of situations is a necessary attribute. NIS staff members embody this philosophy by being a supportive role model for others and passing on their enthusiasm and positive attitude.

Professional Growth
The strategic plan for the recruitment and retention of exemplary staff acknowledges that professional growth is valuable to staff members as well as students. As a community of learners we serve as role models for students, colleagues and parents. Exemplary staff members will seek out opportunities to broaden their horizons through course work, workshops and other activities.
